UC Merced showcases its locally produced technology in publication

UC Merced's Office of Research has released a publication showcasing its work.
The 64-page, full-color document, called "Inventions," highlights technologies that increase the efficiency of solar energy collectors, medical developments that could limit the reproduction of the hepatitis C virus or the spread of HIV, and materials that could improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries.
Highlights from "Inventions" include:
A number of inventions that increase the efficiency of solar energy collectors, developed by Roland Winston.
A solar system that simultaneously offers air conditioning, water heating and power generation, developed by Gerardo Diaz
A treatment technique developed by Jinah Choi and Scott Seronello that may suppress the ability of the hepatitis C liver virus to replicate itself
A low-cost way to encourage production of molecules that speed the recovery of burn victims, improve the quality of life in AIDS patients and fight breast cancer, developed by Matthew Meyer and Hui Zhu
A potential component for topical solutions to prevent the spread of HIV, developed by Patti LiWang
A nanoparticle that could make for an economical, effective alternative to over-the-counter decongestants, developed by Eric Yi-Tong Chen, Wei-Chun Chin and Yung-Chen Wang
Jennifer Lu's polymer-carbon nanotube gel, which could lead to better lithium-ion batteries

Peranan Iptek Dalam Meningkatkan SDM di Indonesia
Contoh Makalah IPTEK – Seperti yang kita ketahui, teknologi kini telah merembes dalam kehidupan kebanyakan manusia bahkan dari kalangan atas hingga menengah kebawah sekalipun. Dimana upaya tersebut merupakan cara atau jalan di dalam mewujudkan kesejahteraan dan peningkatan harkat martabat manusia. Untuk mendayagunakan Iptek diperlukan nilai-nilai luhur agar dapat dipertanggungjawabkan. Rumusan 4 (empat) nilai luhur pembangunan Iptek Nasional yaitu Accountable, Visionary, Innovative dan Excellence. Disamping itu, Perkembangan Iptek bisa bermanfaat untuk kemajuan hidup Indonesia dan juga dapat memberikan dampak negatif. Maka, dalam perkembangan Iptek, ada hal-hal yang perlu diperhatikan dalam penerapan IPTEK untuk menekan dampak negative iptek seminimal mungkin.
Atas dasar kreatifitas akalnya, manusia mengembangkan IPTEK dalam rangka untuk mengolah SDA yang diberikan oleh Tuhan Yang Maha Esa.Dimana dalam pengembangan IPTEK harus didasarkan terhadap moral dan kemanusiaan yang adil dan beradab,agar semua masyarakat mengecam IPTEK secara merata.Begitu juga diharapkan SDM nya bisa lebih baik lagi,apalagi banyak kemudahan yang kita dapatkan.Namun,berbanding terbalik dengan realita yang ada karena semakin canggih perkembangan teknologi,telah membuat masyarakat menjadi malas yang disebabkan oleh kemudahan-kemudahan yang ada tersebut.Ambil saja salah satu contoh perkembangan IPTEK dibidang telekomunikasi dimana zaman dahulu handphone itu sangat langka karena harganya yang mahal berbeda dengan sekarang harga handphone sudah sangat murah dan menjangkau lapisan menengah ke bawah.
Disatu sisi telah terjadi perkembangan yang sangat baik sekali di aspek telekomunikasi,namun pelaksanaan pembangunan IPTEK masih belum merata. Masih banyak masyarakat kurang mampu yang putus harapannya untuk mendapatkan pengetahuan dan teknologi tersebut.Hal itu dikarenakan tingginya biaya pendidikan yang harus mereka tanggung.Maka dari itu,pemerintah perlu menyikapi dan menanggapi masalah-masalah tersebut, agar peranan IPTEK dapat bertujuan untuk meningkatkan Sumber Daya Manusia yang ada.
Adapun Rumusan Masalah yang dapat penulis angkat yaitu bagaimana pelaksanaan dan pengembangan IPTEK di Indonesia serta apakah peranan IPTEK ditengah zaman yang semakin pesat dapat meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya manusia?
Pelaksanaan Dan Pengembangan Iptek Di Indonesia
Peradaban bangsa dan masyarakat dunia di masa depan sudah dipahami dan disadari akan berhadapan dengan situasi serba kompleks dalam berbagai cabang ilmu pengetahuan, sebut saja antara lain; cloning, cosmology, cryonics, cyberneties, exobiology, genetic, engineering dan nanotechnology. Cabang-cabang IPTEK itu telah memunculkan berbagai perkembangan yang sangat cepat dengan implikasi yang menguntungkan bagi manusia atau sebaliknya.
Untuk mendayagunakan Iptek diperlukan nilai-nilai luhur agar dapat dipertanggungjawabkan. Rumusan 4 (empat) nilai luhur pembangunan Iptek Nasional, yaitu :
1. Accountable, penerapan Iptek harus dapat dipertanggungjawabkan baik secara moral, lingkungan, finansial, bahkan dampak politis
2. Visionary, pembangunan Iptek memberikan solusi strategis dan jangka panjang, tetapi taktis dimasa kini, tidak bersifat sektoral dan tidak hanya memberi implikasi terbatas.
3. Innovative, asal katanya adalah “innovere” yang artinya temuan baru yang bermanfaat. Nilai luhur pembangunan Iptek artinya adalah berorientasi pada segala sesuatu yang baru, dan memberikan apresiasi tinggi terhadap upaya untuk memproduksi inovasi baru dalam upaya inovatif untuk meningkatkan produktifitas.
4. Excellence, keseluruhan tahapan pembangunan Iptek mulai dari fase inisiasi, perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengawasan, evaluasi, implikasi pada bangsa harus baik, yang terbaik atau berusaha menuju yang terbaik.
Pesatnya kemajuan Iptek memerlukan penguasaan, pemanfaatan, dan kemajuan Iptek untuk memperkuat posisi daya saing Indonesia dalam kehidupan global.
Dampak Perkembangan Iptek Di Indonesia
1. Perkembangan Iptek disamping bermanfaat untuk kemajuan hidup Indonesia juga memberikan dampak negatif. Hal yang perlu diperhatikan dalam penerapan IPTEK untuk menekan dampaknya seminimal mungkin, antara lain :
• Menjaga keserasian dan keseimbangan dengan lingkungan setempat.
• Teknilogi yang akan diterapkan hendaknya betul-betul dapat mencegah timbulnya permasalahan di tempat itu.
• Memanfaatkan seoptimal mungkin segala sumber daya alam dan sumber daya manusia yang ada.
2. Dampaknya dalam :
a. Penyediaan Pangan
Perkembangan IPTEK dalam bidang pangan dimungkinkan karena adanya pendidikan, penelitian dan pengembangan di bidang pertanian terutama dalam peningkatan produktivitas melalui penerapan varitas unggul, pemupukan, pemberantasan hama dan penyakit, pola tanaman dan pengairan. Namun di sisi lain perkembangan tersebut berdampak fatal, misalkan saja penggunaan pestisida dalam pemberantasan hama ternyata dapat menyebabkan penyakit dalam tubuh manusia.
b. Penyediaan Sandang
• Pada awalnya bahan sandang dihasilkan dari serat alam seperti kapas, sutra, woll dan lain-lain
• Perkembangan teknologi matrial polimer menghasilkan berbagai serat sintetis sebagai bahan sandang seperti rayon, polyester, nilon, dakron, tetoron dan sebagainya
• Kulit sintetik juga dapat dibuat dari polimer termoplastik sebagai bahan sepatu, tas dan lain-lain
• Teknologi pewarnaan juga berkembang seperti penggunaan zat azo dan sebagainya.
c. Penyediaan Papan
• Teknologi papan bersangkut paut dengan penyediaan lahan dan bidang perencanaan seperti city planning, kota satelit, kawasan pemukiman dan sebagainya yang berkaitan dengan perkembangan penduduk
• Awalnya bahan pokok untuk papan adalah kayu selanjutnya dikembangkan teknologi matrial untuk mengatasi kekurangan kayu
• Untuk mengatasi kekurangan akan lahan dikembangkan teknologi gedung bertingkat, pembentukan pulau-pulau baru, bahkan tidak menutup kemungkinan pemukiman ruang angkasa.
d. Peningkatan Kesehatan
• Perkembangan Imu Kedeokteran seperti : ilmu badah dan lain-lain
• Penemuan alat-alat kedokteran seperti : stetoskup, USG, dan lain-lain
• Penemuan obat-obatan seperti anti biotik, vaksin dan lain-lain
• Penemuan radio aktif untuk mendeteksi penyakit secara tepat seperti tumor dan lain-lain
• Penelitian tentang kuman-kuman penyakit dan lain-lain.
e. Penyediaan Energi
• Kebutuhan akan energi
• Sumber-sumber energi
• Sumber energi konvensional tak dapat diperbaharui
• Sumber energi pengganti yang tak habis pakai
• Konversi energi dari satu bentuk kebentuk yang lain.
Kesimpulan
Dengan memperhatikan perkembangan dan kemajuan zaman dengan sendirinya pemanfaatan dan penguasaan IPTEK mutlak diperlukan untuk mencapai kesejahteraan bangsa. Visi dan misi IPTEK dirumuskan sebagai panduan untuk mengoptimalkan setiap sumber daya IPTEK yang dimiliki oleh bangsa Indonesia, Undang-Undang No. 18 Tahun 2002 tentang Sistem Nasional Penelitian, Pengembangan dan Penerapan Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi yang telah diberlakukan sejak 29 Juli 2002, merupakan penjabaran dari visi dan misi IPTEK sebagaimana termaksud dalam UUD 1945 Amandemen pasal 31 ayat 5, agar dapat dilaksanakan oleh pemerintah besrta seluruh rakyat dengan sebaik-baiknya. Selain itu pula perkembangan IPTEK di berbagai bidangdi tengah perkembangan zaman yang semakin pesat semestinya dapat meningkatkan kualitas SDM di tengah bermunculannya dampak negative dari adanya perkembangan IPTEK, sehingga diperlukan pemikiran yang serius dan mantap dalam menghadapi permasalahan dalam penemuan-penemuan baru tersebut.

Kesimpulan
Dengan memperhatikan perkembangan dan kemajuan zaman dengan sendirinya pemanfaatan dan penguasaan IPTEK mutlak diperlukan untuk mencapai kesejahteraan bangsa. Visi dan misi IPTEK dirumuskan sebagai panduan untuk mengoptimalkan setiap sumber daya IPTEK yang dimiliki oleh bangsa Indonesia, Undang-Undang No. 18 Tahun 2002 tentang Sistem Nasional Penelitian, Pengembangan dan Penerapan Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi yang telah diberlakukan sejak 29 Juli 2002, merupakan penjabaran dari visi dan misi IPTEK sebagaimana termaksud dalam UUD 1945 Amandemen pasal 31 ayat 5, agar dapat dilaksanakan oleh pemerintah besrta seluruh rakyat dengan sebaik-baiknya. Selain itu pula perkembangan IPTEK di berbagai bidangdi tengah perkembangan zaman yang semakin pesat semestinya dapat meningkatkan kualitas SDM di tengah bermunculannya dampak negative dari adanya perkembangan IPTEK, sehingga diperlukan pemikiran yang serius dan mantap dalam menghadapi permasalahan dalam penemuan-penemuan baru tersebut.

Pengaruh Perkembangan Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi dalam Era Globalisasi

Ledakan Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi telah membuka babak baru bagi masyarakat untuk memperoleh informasi secara otonom. Sekat-sekat informasi dengan sendirinya menghilang oleh inisiatif kuat individu yang ingin mengetahui lebih jauh apa yang terjadi sekitarnya. Setiap orang memiliki akses terhadap sumber informasi dimanapun di dunia ini. Konsekuensinya, masyarakat menjadi kritis dan tanggap terhadap hal yang berkembang.
Perkembangan dunia teknologi informasi yang demikian pesatnya telah membawa manfaat luar biasa bagi kemajuan peradaban umat manusia. Kegiatan komunikasi yang sebelumnya menuntut peralatan yang begitu rumit, kini relatif sudah digantikan oleh perangkat mesin-mesin otomatis. Sistem kerja alat teknologi telah mengalihfungsikan tenaga otot manusia dengan pembesaran dan percepatan yang menakjubkan. Begitupun dengan telah ditemukannya formulasi-formulasi baru aneka kapasitas komputer, seolah sudah mampu menggeser posisi kemampuan otak manusia dalam berbagai bidang ilmu dan aktivitas manusia. Kemajuan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi yang telah kita capai sekarang benar-benar telah diakui dan dirasakan memberikan banyak kemudahan dan kenyamanan bagi kehidupan umat manusia.
Bagi masyarakat sekarang, teknologi informasi dan komunikasi merupakan suatu religion. Pengembangannya dianggap sebagai solusi dari permasalahan yang ada. Sementara orang bahkan memuja hal tersebut sebagai liberator yang akan membebaskan mereka dari kungkungan kefanaan dunia. Selain itu, hal tersebut juga diyakini akan memberi umat manusia kebahagiaan dan immortalitas. Sumbangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi terhadap peradaban dan kesejahteraan manusia tidaklah dapat dipungkiri.
Seperti yang kita ketahui bahwa di era serba modern seperti saat ini, peran teknologi informasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari tentunya sangat berpengaruh. Hal ini tidak terlepas dari aktivitas kita yang kerap kali ditunjang dengan teknologi informasi itu sendiri yang mampu menjawab tuntutan pekerjaan yang lebih cepat, mudah, murah dan menghemat waktu.
Kemajuan teknologi menjadi jawaban dari kemajuan globalisasi yang kian menyelimuti dunia. Suatu kemajuan yang tentunya akan memberikan dampak bagi peradaban hidup pelajar. Tidak dapat dipungkiri, kini kita telah menjadi “budak” dari peradaban teknologi informasi itu sendiri. Bagaiman tidak, banyaknya pelajar yang sekaligus berperan sebagai pengguna teknologi informasi dan komunikasi, membuktikan bahwa kehidupan yang mereka lakoni tak pernah lepas dari peran teknologi informasi.
Menghadapi keadaan seperti ini, kita sebagai pelajar perlu diarahkan pada sikap “sadar teknologi” atau “melek teknologi”. Kemajuan yang sering diartikan sebagai modernisasi, menjanjikan kemampuan manusia untuk mengendalikan alam melalui ilmu pengetahuan, meningkatkan kesejahteraan material melalui teknologi dan meningkatkan efektivitas kemampuan pelajar melalui penerapan organisasi yang berdasarkan pertimbangan kesadaran. Karena dengan ilmu pengetahuan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi pula, manusia dapat melakukan hal-hal yang sebelumnya belum pernah dibayangkan.
Di satu sisi, teknologi memiliki keuntungan bagi orang yang menggunakannya. Misalkan saja dalam hal berbagi informasi, para pelajar dapat mengakses informasi dunia dengan cepat dan mudah, sehingga mereka dapat menyadari bahwa dunia seakan berada di genggaman mereka. Suatu akses yang tentunya akan memperkaya para pelajar dengan segudang informasi yang dapat memacu motivasi mereka untuk meningkatkan kreativitasnya, khususnya dalam bidang informatika.
Bukan hanya itu, teknologi informasi dan komunikasi juga memiliki andil yang besar dalam hal sarana pembelajaran. Karena seperti yang kita ketahui bahwa teknologi informasi dan komunikasi kini telah merasuk ke dalam kurikulum dunia pendidikan. Suatu hal yang tentunya menjadi gebrakan di dunia pendidikan dalam ajang peningkatan potensi pelajar. Selain itu gelombang kemajuan dan perkembangan teknologi dalam bidang pendidikan telah membawa perubahan pada kehidupan dan gaya hidup pelajar yang lebih dinamis. Dengan adanya hal tersebut, maka pelajar senantiasa menghidupkan dan menyalurkan semangat untuk mengeksplorasi ilmu yang belum diketahui.
Kehidupan kita sekarang perlahan-lahan mulai berubah dari dulunya era industri berubah menjadi era informasi dan komunikasi dibalik pengaruh era globalisasi dan informatika yang menjadikan komputer, internet, dan pesatnya perkembangan teknologi informasi sebagai bagian utama yang harus ada atau tidak boleh kekurangan di dunia pendidikan. Dalam memasuki era tersebut, sekolah memiliki tanggung jawab untuk menyiapkan siswa dalam menghadapi semua tantangan yang berubah sangat cepat dalam lingkungan kehidupan mereka. Kemampuan untuk berbahasa asing dan kemahiran komputer adalah dua kriteria yang sering kali diminta masyarakat untuk memasuki era globalisasi baik di Indonesia maupun di seluruh dunia. Maka dengan adanya komputer yang telah merambah di segala kehidupan manusia, hal itu membutuhkan tanggung jawab yang sangat tinggi bagi sistem pendidikan kita untuk mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa siswa dan kemahiran komputer.
Selain itu dengan adanya sistem pendidikan yang berbasis pada perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi maka diharapkan pelajar-pelajar di negeri kita dapat bersaing dan mengejar ketertinggalan dari pelajar di negeri maju tanpa perlu kehilangan nilai-nilai kemanusian dan budaya yang kita miliki. Atau dengan kata lain, peserta didik di jenjang pendidikan dasar perlu diarahkan dan dibekali pendidikan teknologi guna menuju masyarakat yang “melek teknologi” yaitu bercirikan mampu mengenal, mengerti, memilih, menggunakan, memelihara, memperbaiki, menilai, menghasilkan produk teknologi sederhana, dan peduli terhadap masalah yang berkaitan dengan teknologi.
Di lain hal, teknologi informasi dan komunikasi juga dapat mendorong kita untuk melihat hal kecil sebagai hal yang dapat dijadikan sebagai sejumlah peluang yang tersaji di hadapan mata. Karena dengan begitu, maka kita dapat membalikkan arah imperialisme budaya yang dibawa oleh perkembangan di bidang tekonologi informasi ini, menjadi sesuatu yang bermanfaat.
Namun, di samping semua itu, kita tidak bisa pula menipu diri akan kenyataan bahwa era teknologi informasi dan komunikasi mendatangkan malapetaka dan kesengsaraan bagi kehidupan kita. Dalam peradaban modern yang muda, terlalu sering manusia terhenyak oleh disilusi dari dampak negatif perkembangan teknologi ini terhadap kehidupan umat manusia. Kalaupun teknologi informasi mampu mengungkap semua tabir rahasia alam dan kehidupan, tidak berarti teknologi informasi sinonim dengan kebenaran. Sebab hal tersebut hanya mampu menampilkan kenyataan. Sedangkan kebenaran yang manusiawi haruslah lebih dari sekedar kenyataan obyektif. Tentu saja teknologi informasi dan komunikasi tidak mengenal moral kemanusiaan, oleh karena itu hal tersebut tidak pernah bisa mejadi standar kebenaran ataupun solusi dari masalah-masalah kemanusiaan.
Semakin kuatnya gejala “dehumanisasi”, tergerusnya nilai-nilai kemanusiaan dewasa ini, merupakan salah satu oleh-oleh yang dibawa kemajuan teknologi tersebut. Bahkan, sampai tataran tertentu, dampak negatif dari peradaban yang tinggi itu dapat melahirkan kecenderungan pengingkaran manusia sebagai homo-religousus atau makhluk teomorfis.
Teknologi informasi juga dapat menimbulkan sisi rawan yang gelap sampai tahap mencemaskan dengan kekhawatiran pada perkembangan tindak pidana di bidang teknologi itu sendiri yang berhubungan dengan “cybercrime” atau kejahatan mayantara. Masalah kejahatan mayantara ini sepatutnya mendapat perhatian semua pihak secara seksama pada perkembangan teknologi masa depan. Karena kejahatan ini termasuk salah satu kejahatan luar biasa, bahkan dirasakan pula sebagai kejahatan misterius yang dapat mengancam kehidupan masyarakat. Tindak pidana atau kejahatan ini adalah sisi paling buruk di dalam kehidupan modern dari masyarakat akibat kemajuan pesat teknologi dengan meningkatnya peristiwa kejahatan komputer, pornografi, terorisme digital, “perang” informasi sampah, bias informasi, hacker, cracker dan sebagainya.
Seperti halnya dengan peristiwa kejahatan mayantara yang menimpa situs Mabes TNI, Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT), Mabes Polri dan Departemen Luar Negeri Republik Indonesia merupakan sisi gelap dari kejahatan teknologi informasi yang memanfaatkan kecanggihan internet. Bukan hanya itu, situs Microsoft, NASA dan pentagon tidak luput dari para hacker nakal yang mengacaukan sistem informasi dan data yang dimiliki oleh Amerika Serikat. Selain itu, kasus pembobolan ATM oleh para hacker nakal juga menjadi salah satu dampak negatif dari teknologi informasi yang marak terjadi.
Tak dapat juga dipungkiri bahwa dampak negatif dari teknologi informasi sangat dirasakan oleh kaum pelajar. Banyaknya pelajar yang terlena dengan fasilitas website hiburan dari teknologi informasi seperti facebook, chatting, twitter dan sebagainya, membuat mereka menyampingkan kewajibannya, bahkan mereka menjadikan hal tersebut sebagai hobi yang dilakukan tanpa mengenal waktu. Konsekuensinya, para pelajar akan menjadi malas dan semakin membutakan kesadaran mereka tentang pentingnya sadar teknologi.
Inilah sebenarnya sisi paling buruk yang tidak dapat dihindarkan dan disembunyikan dari kemajuan teknologi informasi dewasa ini. Oleh karena itu kita harus berhati-hati terhadap dampak negatif yang ditimbulkan, karena dampak negaitf tersebut dapat mengubah paradigma pelajar dalam menghadapi era teknologi informasi dan komunikasi.
Bagi pelajar Indonesia, sebagai generasi pelanjut tidak akan luput dari pengaruh perkembangan buruk teknologi informasi dewasa ini maupun masa depan. Masalah ini perlu ditanggulangi supaya tidak menjadi hal yang dapat menjadi ancaman bagi para pelajar dalam mencapai masa depan mereka.
Akan tetapi, janganlah kita mencemaskan perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi ini. Pandai-pandailah kita memanfaatkan media ini dan memilih yang bernilai positif. Ambillah hal yang perlu dan jadikan hal yang bernilai negatif sebagai bahan pertimbangan dan perbandingan. Bersikap positiflah menghadapi perkembangan teknologi informasi ini. perkembangan ini akan memberi pengetahuan yang banyak dan berguna bagi orang-orang yang dapat memanfaatkannya secara positif. Jadi perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi bukanlah sesuatu yang perlu dicemaskan tetapi sesuatu yang harus digali manfaatnya.
Dalam menyikapi perkembangan teknologi itu sendiri, semuanya tergantung dari pribadi kita masing-masing. Karena teknologi informasi dan komunikasi itu memiliki warna dasar putih. Tergantung dari penggunanya. Apakah kita ingin membelokkannya ke kiri dengan mengubah warna putih menjadi kehitaman yang melambangkan sisi negatif teknologi tersebut, atau kita ingin membelokkannya ke kanan dengan mengubah warna putih menjadi keemasan yang melambangkan sisi positif dari teknologi informasi dan komunikasi itu sendiri.

Sedangkan kebenaran yang manusiawi haruslah lebih dari sekedar kenyataan obyektif. Tentu saja teknologi informasi dan komunikasi tidak mengenal moral kemanusiaan, oleh karena itu hal tersebut tidak pernah bisa mejadi standar kebenaran ataupun solusi dari masalah-masalah kemanusiaan.
Semakin kuatnya gejala “dehumanisasi”, tergerusnya nilai-nilai kemanusiaan dewasa ini, merupakan salah satu oleh-oleh yang dibawa kemajuan teknologi tersebut. Bahkan, sampai tataran tertentu, dampak negatif dari peradaban yang tinggi itu dapat melahirkan kecenderungan pengingkaran manusia sebagai homo-religousus atau makhluk teomorfis.
Teknologi informasi juga dapat menimbulkan sisi rawan yang gelap sampai tahap mencemaskan dengan kekhawatiran pada perkembangan tindak pidana di bidang teknologi itu sendiri yang berhubungan dengan “cybercrime” atau kejahatan mayantara. Masalah kejahatan mayantara ini sepatutnya mendapat perhatian semua pihak secara seksama pada perkembangan teknologi masa depan. Karena kejahatan ini termasuk salah satu kejahatan luar biasa, bahkan dirasakan pula sebagai kejahatan misterius yang dapat mengancam kehidupan masyarakat. Tindak pidana atau kejahatan ini adalah sisi paling buruk di dalam kehidupan modern dari masyarakat akibat kemajuan pesat teknologi dengan meningkatnya peristiwa kejahatan komputer, pornografi, terorisme digital, “perang” informasi sampah, bias informasi, hacker, cracker dan sebagainya.
Seperti halnya dengan peristiwa kejahatan mayantara yang menimpa situs Mabes TNI, Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT), Mabes Polri dan Departemen Luar Negeri Republik Indonesia merupakan sisi gelap dari kejahatan teknologi informasi yang memanfaatkan kecanggihan internet. Bukan hanya itu, situs Microsoft, NASA dan pentagon tidak luput dari para hacker nakal yang mengacaukan sistem informasi dan data yang dimiliki oleh Amerika Serikat. Selain itu, kasus pembobolan ATM oleh para hacker nakal juga menjadi salah satu dampak negatif dari teknologi informasi yang marak terjadi.
Tak dapat juga dipungkiri bahwa dampak negatif dari teknologi informasi sangat dirasakan oleh kaum pelajar. Banyaknya pelajar yang terlena dengan fasilitas website hiburan dari teknologi informasi seperti facebook, chatting, twitter dan sebagainya, membuat mereka menyampingkan kewajibannya, bahkan mereka menjadikan hal tersebut sebagai hobi yang dilakukan tanpa mengenal waktu. Konsekuensinya, para pelajar akan menjadi malas dan semakin membutakan kesadaran mereka tentang pentingnya sadar teknologi.
Inilah sebenarnya sisi paling buruk yang tidak dapat dihindarkan dan disembunyikan dari kemajuan teknologi informasi dewasa ini. Oleh karena itu kita harus berhati-hati terhadap dampak negatif yang ditimbulkan, karena dampak negaitf tersebut dapat mengubah paradigma pelajar dalam menghadapi era teknologi informasi dan komunikasi.
Bagi pelajar Indonesia, sebagai generasi pelanjut tidak akan luput dari pengaruh perkembangan buruk teknologi informasi dewasa ini maupun masa depan. Masalah ini perlu ditanggulangi supaya tidak menjadi hal yang dapat menjadi ancaman bagi para pelajar dalam mencapai masa depan mereka.
Akan tetapi, janganlah kita mencemaskan perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi ini. Pandai-pandailah kita memanfaatkan media ini dan memilih yang bernilai positif. Ambillah hal yang perlu dan jadikan hal yang bernilai negatif sebagai bahan pertimbangan dan perbandingan. Bersikap positiflah menghadapi perkembangan teknologi informasi ini. perkembangan ini akan memberi pengetahuan yang banyak dan berguna bagi orang-orang yang dapat memanfaatkannya secara positif. Jadi perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi bukanlah sesuatu yang perlu dicemaskan tetapi sesuatu yang harus digali manfaatnya.
Dalam menyikapi perkembangan teknologi itu sendiri, semuanya tergantung dari pribadi kita masing-masing. Karena teknologi informasi dan komunikasi itu memiliki warna dasar putih. Tergantung dari penggunanya. Apakah kita ingin membelokkannya ke kiri dengan mengubah warna putih menjadi kehitaman yang melambangkan sisi negatif teknologi tersebut, atau kita ingin membelokkannya ke kanan dengan mengubah warna putih menjadi keemasan yang melambangkan sisi positif dari teknologi informasi dan komunikasi itu sendiri.

China Automotive Systems Reports Record Annual Net Sales and Net Income in Fiscal Year 2010
WUHAN, China, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- China Automotive Systems, Inc., ("CAAS" or the "Company"), CAAS -3.27% , a leading power steering components and systems supplier in China, today announced financial results for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2010 and the filing of its annual report on Form 10-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Fourth Quarter Results
Record net sales grew 20% to $100.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 as compared to $83.8 million in the same quarter of 2009.
Gross profit was $19.8 million compared to $19 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, which reflects an increase in net sales and sales volumes that were partially offset by declines in sales price in excess of unit cost reductions.
Operating income grew 44.7% to $12.3 million for the fourth quarter of 2010 from $8.5 million in the 2009 fourth quarter. Operating margin climbed to 12.2% in the fourth quarter of 2010 from 10.1% in the fourth quarter of 2009.
Net income was $12.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2010, or diluted earnings per share of $0.22 versus a loss of $24.2 million, or $0.89 loss per share in the same quarter of 2009.
Fiscal Year 2010 Results
For the year ended December 31, 2010, net sales rose 35.3% to a yearly record of $345.9 million as compared to $255.6 million for 2009.
Gross profit increased by 30% to $80.3 million, from $61.7 million in 2009. Gross margin was 23.2 % in 2010.
Operating income grew 46.3% to $54.0 million, compared with $36.9 million in 2009. The operating margin increased to 15.6% of net sales in 2010 from 14.4% in 2009.
Record annual net income attributable to the parent company was $51.7 million, or diluted earnings per share of $1.10, versus a loss of $26.4 million, or $0.98 loss per share, in 2009.
Cash flow from operations was $38.5 million.
Cash and cash equivalents were $49.4 million at December 31, 2010.
CAAS's record annual net sales were $345.9 million, up 35.3% or $90.3 million from the fiscal year 2009 sales of $255.6 million.
Gross profit for the fiscal year 2010 increased by 30.1% to $80.3 million, from a restated $61.7 million for the 2009 year. Gross margin was 23.2% in 2010 compared with 24.2% in 2009 due to price reductions more than offsetting lower unit costs. Gross profit in 2010 and 2009 included warranty expenses that in prior years were included in selling expenses.
Selling expenses in 2010 rose by 18.6%, or $1.5 million, to $9.4 million from a restated $7.9 million in 2009 due to a higher warehouse rental rate, and greater office and transportation expenses reflecting both higher oil prices as well as a greater number of units sold. As a percentage of sales, selling expenses were 2.7% in 2010 and 3.1% in 2009. The 2009 selling expenses were restated to reflect the reclassification of warranty expenses into cost of product sold.
General and administrative expenses declined 34% to $10.0 million from $15.2 million for the year ended December 31, 2009. The decrease in general and administrative expenses was from: a) lower depreciation and amortization, as some equipment became fully depreciated; b) a reduced bad debt provision, as almost $2.6 million of bad debts were recovered in 2010; c) lower repair and maintenance costs; and d) reduced office expenses, which more than offset increased listing and professional fees related to being a public company. As a percent of sales, general and administrative expenses were 2.9% compared with 5.9% in 2009.
Research and development (R&D) expense increased 212% to $8.0 million in 2010 from $2.6 million in 2009 primarily due to development for commercial production of the Company's electric power steering (EPS) products as well as upgrading traditional hydraulic steering products and advancing manufacturing efficiencies. As a percentage of sales, R&D expenses were 2.3% in 2010 as compared to 1.0% in 2009.
Operating income grew 46.3%, to $54.0 million in 2010 from $36.9 million in 2009, due to higher gross profit and strict cost controls limiting the growth of operating expenses, especially general and administrative expenses. As a percent of sales, the operating margin was 15.6% compared with 14.4% in 2009.
Financial expenses decreased to $3.4 million for 2010 compared to $7.9 million for 2009 primarily due to lower interest expenses. Interest expenses relate mainly to amortization expenses of the Convertible Notes discount and accrual on make-whole redemption interest. Pursuant to the terms of the Convertible Notes the Company issued in 2008, Convertible Note holders are entitled to require the Company to redeem all or any portion of the Convertible Notes in cash, if the weighted average price ("WAP"), is less than $3.187 for twenty (20) consecutive trading days at any time following February 15, 2009. In March 2009, due to a default on the WAP under the aforesaid contractual provision (the "WAP Default"), the Company accrued approximately $3,900,000 of all the remaining discount on Convertible Notes immediately and accrued an additional $520,000 of interest expenses in 2009. In 2010, there were no amortization expenses of the Convertible Notes discount. For the years ended December 31, 2010 and 2009, the Company's accrual on make-whole redemption interest was $1.9 million and $3.3 million, respectively.
For 2010, the gain on change in fair value of the derivatives embedded in the Convertible Notes was $20.2 million, compared to a loss of $43.1 million in 2009. Effective on January 1, 2009, the Company adopted ASC 815-10 and was required to bifurcate the embedded conversion feature of the Convertible Notes, classify it as a derivative liability and measure it at fair value at each reporting period. In 2010, the Company's common stock market price dropped to $13.62 from $18.71 at the beginning of the year, which significantly decreased the intrinsic value of the embedded conversion feature of the Convertible Notes. As a result, the fair value of compound derivative liabilities decreased significantly, and correspondingly, the gain on change in fair value of derivatives increased. In 2009, the stock price rose from $3.39 at the beginning of 2009 to $18.71, which significantly increased the intrinsic value of the embedded conversion feature of the Convertible Notes. As a result, the fair value of compound derivative liabilities increased significantly, and correspondingly, the loss on change in fair value of derivatives increased.
Income before income taxes increased by $85.3 million to $71.4 million in 2010, from a loss of $13.9 million in 2009.This gain resulted primarily from an increase of $17.1 million in operating income, a decrease in financial expenses of $4.5 million, and an increase in the gain on change in the fair value of the derivatives by $63.2 million in 2010 versus the 2009 results. Income before taxes represented 20.6% of net sales in 2010 versus a loss in 2009.
Income tax expense was $8.5 million in 2010 compared to $4.7 million in 2009. Income taxes increased mainly due to higher taxable income in 2010.
Net income was $51.8 million in 2010 compared to a loss of $26.4 million for 2009. Diluted earnings per share were $1.10 in 2010 compared with loss per share of $0.98 in 2009. The weighted average number of basic common shares outstanding was 27,098,258 in 2010 and 26,990,649 in 2009. The weighted average number of diluted common shares outstanding was 31,565,422 in 2010 and 26,990,649 in 2009.
As of December 31, 2010, total cash and cash equivalents were $49.4 million, as compared with $43.5 million at the end of 2009. Working capital was $54.2 million at the end of 2010. Net cash flow from operations was $38.6 million for the year ended December 31, 2010. Cash used to acquire property, plant and equipment for capacity expansion was $ 28 million in 2010.
Business Outlook
Management provides revenue guidance of 15% year-over-year growth for the 2011 year. This target is based on the Company's current views on operating and market conditions, which are subject to change.

China Automotive Systems Reports Record Annual Net Sales and Net Income in Fiscal Year 2010
WUHAN, China, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- China Automotive Systems, Inc., ("CAAS" or the "Company"), CAAS -3.27% , a leading power steering components and systems supplier in China, today announced financial results for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2010 and the filing of its annual report on Form 10-K with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Fourth Quarter Results
Record net sales grew 20% to $100.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 as compared to $83.8 million in the same quarter of 2009.
Gross profit was $19.8 million compared to $19 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, which reflects an increase in net sales and sales volumes that were partially offset by declines in sales price in excess of unit cost reductions.
Operating income grew 44.7% to $12.3 million for the fourth quarter of 2010 from $8.5 million in the 2009 fourth quarter. Operating margin climbed to 12.2% in the fourth quarter of 2010 from 10.1% in the fourth quarter of 2009.
Net income was $12.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2010, or diluted earnings per share of $0.22 versus a loss of $24.2 million, or $0.89 loss per share in the same quarter of 2009.
Fiscal Year 2010 Results
For the year ended December 31, 2010, net sales rose 35.3% to a yearly record of $345.9 million as compared to $255.6 million for 2009.
Gross profit increased by 30% to $80.3 million, from $61.7 million in 2009. Gross margin was 23.2 % in 2010.
Operating income grew 46.3% to $54.0 million, compared with $36.9 million in 2009. The operating margin increased to 15.6% of net sales in 2010 from 14.4% in 2009.
Record annual net income attributable to the parent company was $51.7 million, or diluted earnings per share of $1.10, versus a loss of $26.4 million, or $0.98 loss per share, in 2009.
Cash flow from operations was $38.5 million.
Cash and cash equivalents were $49.4 million at December 31, 2010.
CAAS's record annual net sales were $345.9 million, up 35.3% or $90.3 million from the fiscal year 2009 sales of $255.6 million.
Gross profit for the fiscal year 2010 increased by 30.1% to $80.3 million, from a restated $61.7 million for the 2009 year. Gross margin was 23.2% in 2010 compared with 24.2% in 2009 due to price reductions more than offsetting lower unit costs. Gross profit in 2010 and 2009 included warranty expenses that in prior years were included in selling expenses.
Selling expenses in 2010 rose by 18.6%, or $1.5 million, to $9.4 million from a restated $7.9 million in 2009 due to a higher warehouse rental rate, and greater office and transportation expenses reflecting both higher oil prices as well as a greater number of units sold. As a percentage of sales, selling expenses were 2.7% in 2010 and 3.1% in 2009. The 2009 selling expenses were restated to reflect the reclassification of warranty expenses into cost of product sold.
General and administrative expenses declined 34% to $10.0 million from $15.2 million for the year ended December 31, 2009. The decrease in general and administrative expenses was from: a) lower depreciation and amortization, as some equipment became fully depreciated; b) a reduced bad debt provision, as almost $2.6 million of bad debts were recovered in 2010; c) lower repair and maintenance costs; and d) reduced office expenses, which more than offset increased listing and professional fees related to being a public company. As a percent of sales, general and administrative expenses were 2.9% compared with 5.9% in 2009.
Research and development (R&D) expense increased 212% to $8.0 million in 2010 from $2.6 million in 2009 primarily due to development for commercial production of the Company's electric power steering (EPS) products as well as upgrading traditional hydraulic steering products and advancing manufacturing efficiencies. As a percentage of sales, R&D expenses were 2.3% in 2010 as compared to 1.0% in 2009.
Operating income grew 46.3%, to $54.0 million in 2010 from $36.9 million in 2009, due to higher gross profit and strict cost controls limiting the growth of operating expenses, especially general and administrative expenses. As a percent of sales, the operating margin was 15.6% compared with 14.4% in 2009.
Financial expenses decreased to $3.4 million for 2010 compared to $7.9 million for 2009 primarily due to lower interest expenses. Interest expenses relate mainly to amortization expenses of the Convertible Notes discount and accrual on make-whole redemption interest. Pursuant to the terms of the Convertible Notes the Company issued in 2008, Convertible Note holders are entitled to require the Company to redeem all or any portion of the Convertible Notes in cash, if the weighted average price ("WAP"), is less than $3.187 for twenty (20) consecutive trading days at any time following February 15, 2009. In March 2009, due to a default on the WAP under the aforesaid contractual provision (the "WAP Default"), the Company accrued approximately $3,900,000 of all the remaining discount on Convertible Notes immediately and accrued an additional $520,000 of interest expenses in 2009. In 2010, there were no amortization expenses of the Convertible Notes discount. For the years ended December 31, 2010 and 2009, the Company's accrual on make-whole redemption interest was $1.9 million and $3.3 million, respectively.
For 2010, the gain on change in fair value of the derivatives embedded in the Convertible Notes was $20.2 million, compared to a loss of $43.1 million in 2009. Effective on January 1, 2009, the Company adopted ASC 815-10 and was required to bifurcate the embedded conversion feature of the Convertible Notes, classify it as a derivative liability and measure it at fair value at each reporting period. In 2010, the Company's common stock market price dropped to $13.62 from $18.71 at the beginning of the year, which significantly decreased the intrinsic value of the embedded conversion feature of the Convertible Notes. As a result, the fair value of compound derivative liabilities decreased significantly, and correspondingly, the gain on change in fair value of derivatives increased. In 2009, the stock price rose from $3.39 at the beginning of 2009 to $18.71, which significantly increased the intrinsic value of the embedded conversion feature of the Convertible Notes. As a result, the fair value of compound derivative liabilities increased significantly, and correspondingly, the loss on change in fair value of derivatives increased.
Income before income taxes increased by $85.3 million to $71.4 million in 2010, from a loss of $13.9 million in 2009.This gain resulted primarily from an increase of $17.1 million in operating income, a decrease in financial expenses of $4.5 million, and an increase in the gain on change in the fair value of the derivatives by $63.2 million in 2010 versus the 2009 results. Income before taxes represented 20.6% of net sales in 2010 versus a loss in 2009.
Income tax expense was $8.5 million in 2010 compared to $4.7 million in 2009. Income taxes increased mainly due to higher taxable income in 2010.
Net income was $51.8 million in 2010 compared to a loss of $26.4 million for 2009. Diluted earnings per share were $1.10 in 2010 compared with loss per share of $0.98 in 2009. The weighted average number of basic common shares outstanding was 27,098,258 in 2010 and 26,990,649 in 2009. The weighted average number of diluted common shares outstanding was 31,565,422 in 2010 and 26,990,649 in 2009.
As of December 31, 2010, total cash and cash equivalents were $49.4 million, as compared with $43.5 million at the end of 2009. Working capital was $54.2 million at the end of 2010. Net cash flow from operations was $38.6 million for the year ended December 31, 2010. Cash used to acquire property, plant and equipment for capacity expansion was $ 28 million in 2010.

Management provides revenue guidance of 15% year-over-year growth for the 2011 year. This target is based on the Company's current views on operating and market conditions, which are subject to change.

CommunicAsia is one of Asia's largest exhibitions around the information and communication technology space - an annual feature on Singapore's calendar.
This year at CommunicAsia, the 'cloud' was a focus of various vendors. There were cloud management applications and various cloud computing services showcased during the event.
Another technology that saw an increased emphasis was NFC (Near Field Communication). Nokia, ZTE and several others announced various phones and accessories with NFC capability, while the visiting public was treated to NFC demos for coupons, ticketing, payments as well as music playback. NTT Docomo also showcased the use of augmented reality in various simple games at their booth using tablets.
In terms of hardware, major smartphone announcements from Nokia and Sony Ericsson were the main highlight. Nokia announced its new flagship MeeGo device while Sony Ericsson showcased new Xperia phones and smart accessories for Xperia owners. Sony Ericsson also launched an entry-level QWERTY phone targeted at the youth.
At Blackberry's demo area, people lined up to get a look and feel of the PlayBook tablet and the upcoming Bold Touch 9900 smartphone. Tablets showcase by Huawei and ZTE added to the exponentially growing Android tablet segment. LG, Samsung and HTC were missing in action, but these are some of the more interesting announcements from the show floor.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray: The phone is 9.4mm thin with a metal body casing and It has a 3.3-inch touchscreen with a 1Ghz processor, Wi-Fi, DLNA, 8MP camera and runs Android 2.3
Nokia c2-02: This is Nokia's newest touch-andtype slider phone. This is a Series 40 phone, but it has a new version of maps, with offline navigation built in.
ZTE T72 Tablet: The T72 has a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, 1Ghz processor and 16GB storage. It runs Android 2.3 and comes with a 2MP rear camera and 3G connectivity
Huawei Media Pad: It's the first 7-inch tablet to come with a dual-core 1.2Ghz processor running Android 3.2. It also has a 5MP camera, microUSB and microHDMI ports
Nokia N9: The N9 runs the MeeGo operating system on a 1Ghz processor with 1GB of RAM. It will probably be the last phone to be powered by the platform
Sony Ericsson Txt: The Txt is an entry-level phone with 2.6-inch display, full QWERTY keypad, Wi-Fi and a 3.2MP fixed focus camera
Nokia c2-03: This is a dual-SIM version of the C2, with all other features remaining the same. Like the C2-02, it has a 2.6-inch resistive touchscreen with a 240x320 resolution
Sony Ericsson Xperia Active: Sony Ericsson's first rugged android 2.3 smartphone has a 3-inch touchscreen, 5MP AF camera and a speedy 1Ghz processor
Sony Ericsson LiveSound : This pair of earphones offers great sound, has a tangle free design and allows access to various compatible applications on the Xperia phones with the touch of a button
Sony Ericsson LiveDock : It integrates with your Xperia smartphone & launches the app when connected, turning your phone into a media player or photo frame
Nokia Play 360: This portable speaker can be used via Bluetooth, 3.5mm cable and paired with NFC on supported phones. The built in battery is good enough for 20 hours of playback at mid levels

T-Mobile says wireless network upgraded in San Diego
Company increases download speeds

T-Mobile USA said Thursday that it has upgraded its cellular network in San Diego and 39 other cities, boosting speeds that data can be delivered to smart phones and other mobile devices.
T-Mobile has called its network 4G -- even though it has actually upgraded of its existing 3G network to achieve faster speeds.
Still, the speeds T-Mobile says it is achieving with its network upgrades -- called HSPA+ 42 -- are a significant improvement over typical 3G network speeds. The company says it has seen average download speeds approaching 10 megabits per second, and even faster peak speeds, with its T-Mobile Rocket 3.0 laptop stick.
Verizon, which has launched a newly built 4G wireless network using Long Term Evolution technology, says it can achieve average download speeds of 5 megabits to 12 megabits per second. Verizon 4G is available in parts of San Diego County and about three dozen other cities.
Typical speeds for 3G wireless networks are about 1 megabit to 2 megabits per second. T-Mobile has said data traffic on its San Diego wireless network has increased 300 percent in the past year as more mobile device users tap into the Internet via cellular networks.
T-Mobile invested $24 million in network upgrades in San Diego in 2010, and now has more than 600 cell sites in Western San Diego County. This year, the company has invested nearly $6 million in the San Diego network.
T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 42 network is available in the majority of San Diego, including Petco Park, Qualcomm Stadium, the San Diego Zoo, Legoland, La Jolla, Old Town, UCSD, San Diego State, downtown and beaches from Oceanside to Imperial Beach.
The company has entered an agreement to be purchased by AT&T pending regulatory approval.

Company increases download speeds
